cooler master tpc 800

The package arrived in a smaller than usual but stylish carton package in black and purple… Strange, seems Cooler Master changed their package appearance and this is the first one to use it. New cooler using new technology inside new package – so cute :). As you can see in the front side of the box there was a picture with the model and some technical characteristics, and as usual, the full technical information was on the back and on the side panel:

So let’s see what the cooler looks like:

After I opened the black/purple box I saw two smaller boxes. Obviously, one of them was for holding the cooler and the other one was for the mounting accessories. The first small package to be opened was the one holding the cpu cooler.

As you can see the cooler is really impressive from all sides. It is really massive and looking really good but for me it’s more important how it will performs.

From first sight I saw some very interesting features added to this product.

1. The contact surface of the cooler is perfectly polished and much bigger than the average surfaces of other coolers I’ve tested so far and may cause some problems, which made me think that this model is meant to work at full load with very fast and hot processors using sockets 2011 or FM1. Unfortunately, this model doesn’t offer a CDC technology and for that reason may show a bit lower performance used on older processor models.

2. The most important thing about this cooler are the heat pipes. As you can see on the next picture it’s a really interesting and complicated structure.

TPC-800 uses two separate cooling technologies to transfer heat – heat pipes and vertical vapor chambers placed in two levels. The first level is holding the six regular Ø6mm heat pipes, while the second level is holding the recently patented new model of heatpipes called vertical vapor chambers.

3. The third interesting thing in the structure of Cooler Master TPC-800 are the fins. They are specially designed so the heatsink receives concentrated cold airflow from the fans. Before I continue with the test and review I should say that there are no fans with this cooler. It’s sold as passive cooler but is not meant to work as one and for that reason I will have to use two Cooler Master Excalibur fans so I can conduct the tests.

So far I spoke only about one of the boxes holding the CPU cooler. So I think it’s time to check what’s inside the other box – the smaller one.

The second small package holds the additional elements needed for normal usage of the CPU cooler.

  1. Manual for mounting the cooler on Intel and AMD platforms
  2. Thermal paste
  3. Universal bracket for mounting the cooler on Intel and AMD platforms
  4. Mounting kit with screws and rubber pads
  5. Back plate for mounting
  6. 4 plastic brackets for installing 2 x 120mm fans. There are no fans inside the package.

Cooler Master TPC-800 can be mounted in vertical and horizontal position on Intel platforms and just horizontal position on the AMD motherboards. According to Cooler Master the cooler is suitable for use on sockets using absolutely the same mounting kit:

  1. Intel Socket: LGA 2011 / 1366 / 1156 / 1155 / 775
  2. AMD Socket: FM1 / AM3+ / AM3 / AM2+ / AM2

So let’s do some tests:

For the last few days I was planning to compare Cooler Master TPC-800 with Prolimatech Megahalems at same conditions but I’ve decided not to do it because:

  1. For the past few months we saw many new coolers and all of them supporting Intel socket 2011. Like all of them, Cooler Master TPC-800 support 2011 too but since all 2011 processors are much bigger we all saw that all coolers offer quite bigger contact surface than the older coolers.
  2. For the tests I am using processor – AMD Athlon 2 x4 620 with Die size only 169 mm² and cooling IHS size of 1404 mm².

Cooler Master TPC-800: the actual cooler contact surface is 1976 mm² . And since the processor is much smaller, then we will see the two outer heatpipes not in contact with the processor and Cooler Master TPC-800 Test working with only 4 heat pipes and 2 vapor chambers.

Prolimatech Megahalems: the actual cooler contact surface is 1638 mm² which is a bit bigger than the AMD Athlon 2 x4 620. With this processor, all of the heatpipes will be in contact and Prolimatech Megahalems will be working at full capacity.

For that reason I believe that Cooler Master TPC-800 will show his muscles at 100% capacity tested only with processors like Intel i7-3xxx with bigger Die size and bigger IHS (thermal plate).

AMD Athlon 2 x4 620 – Die size 169 mm² with IHS size of 1404 mm².

Intel i7-3930K: Die size 435 mm² with IHS size of 2100 mm².

To keep the tradition, before I move on to the test results, I would like to describe the system, used for the test:

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 620 at standard frequency of 2611 MHz and overclocked at 3640 MHz (at 1.5V) per core for the tests.

Motherboard: GigaByte 790X-UD3P

Video card: Sapphire 5830 Extreme 1GB DDR5 256bit

Memory: 2 x 2GB Apacer 800 MHz

Hard drive: Kingston SSD SV100S264G

Case: Cooler Master HAF 932

Power supply: Cooler Master Silent Pro 600

Cooler: Cooler Master TPC-800

Thermal paste: Standard paste from the Cooler Master TPC-800 package

Fans mounted on the cooler: Two CoolerMaster Excalibur 120mm

The tests were conducted in a closed system with:

  1. 230mm fan on the front panel putting fresh air in and spinning at about 700 rpm
  2. 230mm fan on the side panel putting fresh air in and spinning at about 700 rpm
  3. 230mm fan on the top panel taking hot air out and spinning at about 700 rpm.
  4. Room temperature of about 28 degrees.

I will install Cooler Master TPC-800 in horizontal position and do tests at default frequency 2611 mHz and overclocked frequency of 3640 mHz using one and two Cooler Master Excalibur fans.

So let’s get dirty and install Cooler Master TPC-800 for conducting the tests.

Cooler Master TPC-800 with one Cooler Master Excalibur intalled.

After the cooler was installed I realized that all four DIMM slots can be used if the DIMM memory are without or with smaller heatspreaders. It’s not possible to use on AMD four memory moduls with tall heatspreaders.

The results from the tests with one Cooler Master Excalibur are:

The results from the tests with two Cooler Master Excalibur are:

The test results have been summed up in the following charts:

And the fan speed during the tests:

It is time for me to express my own conclusions about the results, the vision and the structure of Cooler Master TPC-800.

  1. Cooler Master TPC-800 is a really modern and inovative CPU cooler using brand new type of heat pipes. From what I saw, this model is meant to handle the modern CPU trends and if anybody asked me I would recommend it for using at really high end CPU models with huge TDP. Unfortunatelly I wouldn’t say it’s good for old CPU models, because they are with smaller Die size and smaller contact surface – IHS, which will make TPC-800 work at lower than 100% performance since TPC-800 has big contact surface.
  2. Cooler Master TPC-800 comes as a passive model but according to the manufacturer it should be used with at least one fan. Personally, I wouldn’t even try to use it as passive because sooner or later it will become hot, except if you have 10 fast fans installed inside the case. But still that’s just me. Apart from that we saw two plastic brackets for installing fans, so I would suggest to be used with 2 fans in push-pull method.
  3. I wont talk about noise level because the model is passive but should be used with fans and that depends on what fans the customers will choose.
  4. Seems TPC-800 uses similar to many older models structure and vision. Standard one tower model with contact surface, heatpipes and huge fins surface. The only different thing is the plastic cap on top which covers the first fin and the heatpipes, which looks quite nice.

I want to say some words before I finish this test and review. This cooler is a brand new model with really inovative details which kinda make it before its time. The cooler clearly will handle processors that are still not so common because of their price. I was expecting it to perform a bit better with my AMD Athlon 2 x4 620 but after I checked the cooler it was obvious that the processor’s IHS is much smaller than the cooler contact surface and for that reason the outer heatpipes were not working well.

Personally I am waiting to see reviews with much newer processors like FX-8150 or I7 3930K because there Cooler Master TPC-800 should perform at 100% and we will see its real performance.
